Festival of Heroes packs the punch for Kerhonkson

On Sept. 10, Hot Shotz in Kehonkson presented the Back the Blue and Red: Festival of Heroes, a street-wide celebration to honor all the first responders, military, correction officers and veterans.

“This was something I created, but I have to give a great deal of credit to Sheriff James Slinsky from the Ulster County K9 Unit,” said Danielle Freer, owner and operator of Hot Shotz. “James is the biggest hero, and this could not have been done with out him. I may have started it, but he finished it with a bang. He is truly lifeline in our community and should be honored. He went above and beyond, and we can't thank him enough.”

Her goal was to bring people together to learn more about and show appreciation for law enforcement. “They are always there for us,” said Freer. “They are our protectors and will never stand alone in this community. They are humans like me and you. All our first responders are not appreciated enough and are just expected to be there when we call. It's time we said thanks, that we appreciate all they do.”

The event was very well received, with community members of all ages enjoying the food, fun and festivities. “It was amazing,” Freer said. “Streets filled with vendors, a full stage of performers, games and demonstrations for kids, which included Ulster County Sheriffs Dive Tank.”

Hot Shotz is at 8 42nd St., just a few yards off Route 209, Kerhonkson. To see the great pics taken at the event, visit the bluestonepress.net website or email backtheblueandred@gmail.com.
