The Town of Rochester is working again this year with local residents to clean up the community with the Earth Day Road Clean-up, April 15-22. Rochester residents and friends can “Adopt a Road” of their choice. Bags are provided for free and can be picked up at the Accord Community Center, 15 GLF Road, Accord. Earth Day festivities continue at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, April 30, at the Community Center in Accord with a Solarize and Energy Efficiency presentation followed by the famous Wood Fired Pizza Party with music by Tulula! This event is sponsored by the Town of Rochester Environmental Conservation Commission, the Youth Commission and Solarize Rondout Valley. To commemorate Earth Day, residents of High Falls are pitching in to beautify the town during Green-Up Days, to be held 9 a.m.-noon April 22. This is a free event, open to all neighbors interested in a few hours of satisfying work giving their hometown a spring cleaning. This townwide event is sponsored by the High Falls Civic Association (HFCA). Meet at 9 a.m. at the white tent at the corner of 2nd Street and Route 213, near DePuy Canal House. Participants will be assigned a Green-Up sector, be given a map and sturdy collection bags. Volunteers are asked to wear long-sleeve shirts, long pants, waterproof boots and extra-sturdy gloves. Coffee and breakfast treats will be served. High Falls Green-Up Days is coordinated by good neighbor Leslee Rachel Cooper, vice president of HFCA. Volunteers who cannot come on April 22 are invited to conduct their spring roadside clean-up on their own time. Feel free to come by and pick up free large garbage bags. (No dumping fees will apply at the High Falls Transfer Station within one week.) First come, first served. High Falls is also planning a Green-Up Days event in the autumn, focused on local beautification after the new bridge is installed. Volunteer gardeners are needed. This will be a joint project by the High Falls Civic Association and the High Falls Conservancy. Dates to be announced. Local businesses are invited to donate supplies and/or labor. John Messerschmidt of Poison Ivy Patrol Specialty Landscaping will donate crew labor for chemical-free invasive plant removal. Volunteer outdoors, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, April 22, at the Center, 477 Beaverkill Road, Olivebridge. Volunteers receive free lunch. Bring work gloves, boots and gardening tools. Tasks include: garden preparation, trail and path maintenance and invasive removal. Celebrate later indoors, 4-9 p.m., with a John Burroughs reading and talk by scholar Jeff Walker, dinner by chef Bill Warnes, mini concert by Jay Ungar & Molly Mason and square dance with the Walker Family Band. The Rosendale Youth Program presents their Earth Day Clean-Up, 1-4 p.m. Saturday, April 22. The group will be cleaning up the Rosendale Recreation Center followed by James Street and Main Street.
