Patrick Malin, May Artist at the Rosendale Cafe

Posted

“I work outdoors in oils on handmade paper. This portable approach dates back to the beginnings of landscape painting in Europe and America,” said Rosendale Café’s May Artist, Patrick Malin. “Artists like Corot went to Italy to capture its light, and Hudson River School painters went west to record the shape of the continent using this method. This was a traditional way to study from ‘Nature.’ In this spirit, I’ve been painting in remote natural areas – on protected and/or public lands in America’s western deserts and mountains, in places which are now threatened by population pressures and by the new political regime. The group of paintings in this show [at the Café, 434 Main St., Rosendale, through May 30] is primarily from the Bears Ears region of Utah, Owen’s Valley east of the Sierra Nevadas in California, and part of western Nevada,” said Malin. Malin was born (1963) in Philadelphia. He received his BFA in painting at the Tyler School of Art in 1989 and did a graduate study in painting at Penn State University School of Visual Arts (1991-93). The closing reception of this exhibit will be 2-4 p.m. Sunday, May 27. For more information, visit patrick-malin.com and rosendalecafe.com or call 658-9048.
