Pigs for Beginners

Posted

Join Cornell Cooperative Extension of Ulster County for this class, 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 23, at CCEUC Education Center, 232 Plaza Road (Hannaford Plaza), Kingston. Pigs are a great introduction to raising livestock. Their inquisitive nature and friendly disposition makes them fun animals to watch and to interact with. Pigs can be managed to alter landscapes and improve fallow fields. The class will be led by CCEUC livestock educator Jason Detzel, who has years of experience raising pigs. The course covers the basics of caring for pigs including food and water needs, shelter requirements, and the use of tree mast to supplement their diets. Registration per person is $20 or $10 for enrolled members of the Agriculture Program, with children 12 and under free with an adult. Walk-ins are welcome, but space is limited.
