The new logo for the Rosendale Farmers Market was unveiled at the first market of the summer season on June 4. Over the past few months, the Rosendale Farmers Market has been collaborating with a design program at SUNY Ulster to create a new logo for the market. The Real World Classroom Design Program at SUNY Ulster encourages students to gain experience by interacting with clients to develop various design projects. The collaboration between the students and the Rosendale Farmers Market began in February 2017 and concluded in the end of April. Over the course of two months, the students met with Megan Sperry, a board member for the Rosendale Farmers Market, who pitched the organization’s need for a modern logo that represents the community and the mission of the market.

“I have to say, I didn’t know what to expect, but the designs were all amazing. It was very difficult to pick just one,” Sperry said. Every other week the students would meet with Sperry to share their designs. At each meeting the students would receive feedback from the client, and then they would make changes based on that feedback.

Professor and applied learning expert Sean Nixon said, “Working with real clients is about working with real people, listening, problem solving and presentation. This is something the students may do the rest of their lives.” The finalists were chosen and brought to the farmers market board, and the board chose one design to move forward with as the official logo for the Rosendale Farmers Market.

“When Nixon told me, I was shocked and super happy,” said Elizabeth Galeano, the student who designed the logo. When asked about her inspiration for the project, she said, “My first thought was how could I represent Rosendale? That’s when the use of the trestle came to mind. Anyone who knows Rosendale, knows that trestle. To represent community, the circle around the whole piece really symbolizes that. My third thought behind the logo was obviously, how can I represent the amazingly wonderful farmers market? I wanted to illustrate fruit and veggies to entice customers for the farm fresh food that’s available in their backyards.”

Reflecting on the experience, Sperry said, “Working with the designers at SUNY Ulster has been a truly amazing partnership. And what better way to serve the community than to work together.”
