Trees for Tributaries Planting – help plant trees along the banks of the creeks

Posted

Come enjoy a beautiful autumn day in a restored native habitat, and plant trees, 10 a.m.-noon Saturday, Oct. 19, at the woodland next to 66 Sundown Road, Kerhonkson; look for the signs. There are 70+ trees to get in the ground from the Spring Trees for Tribs planting. With strength in numbers, it’ll take a couple of hours for this event. The planting holes, tree-tubes and shrub cages will be ready. There are two beautiful creeks at the site, the Mettacahonts and the Red Brook. The tributary flows through a meadow area, where everyone will be planting. Because the invasives are under control, the meadow has grown in with milkweed, asters and goldenrod. This summer it fostered hundreds of monarch butterflies. Where knotweed and multiflora used to be, gray dogwoods, oaks, maples, redbud trees, turtlehead flowers have taken their place. Provided are tree-tubes, friends, neighbors, birds, creeks, meadows, woods, paths, flowers, frogs, gorgeous autumn foliage, and a potluck get-together afterward at the house around the corner. Bring the kids, and gloves, wear gardening-type clothes, sunscreen/sunhat. By completing this planting, the number of trees along the creeks will be brought to over 300, having a beneficial impact on the whole Hudson River watershed.
