Muriel Heslop (Toni Collette in her star-making role) longs to break out of her dreary town of Porpoise Spit, spending lonely days and nights in her room listening to her beloved Abba and dreaming of the day her reality will match her fantasies. Cast off by her girlfriends, who fear her decidedly unglamorous looks will be a drag on their social chances, she finally finds a friend who helps her shake off her awkwardness and fly. And does she ever!
