Local historian Paul O'Neill lecture on Gen. George H. Sharpe, Ulster County’s War Hero

The D&H Canal Museum and Mid-Hudson Visitor Center, 1315 Main St., High Falls opens its lecture season, 7 p.m. Friday March 14, with local historian Paul O'Neill who will present, Gen. George H. Sharp, Ulster County’s War Hero. O’Neill will talk about Sharpe, spy master, confidant to Generals and Presidents whose intelligence during the summer of 1863 ultimately led to the Battle of Gettysburg and helped seal the fate of the Confederate South. Sharpe was also Colonel of Ulster County’s 120th NY Volunteer Infantry Regiment, the Washington Guard.

O’Neill attended George Washington University National Law Center, practicing law in New Paltz and then in Kingston for 15 years, including 14 years as an Assistant District Attorney for Ulster County. He is currently the Commissioner of Jurors for Ulster County, serving in that position since 2010 and an amateur historian with a strong interest in local history.
