Adult Learning Summer Series, Nature, the Storyteller at Minnewaska

Join Josh Grosse, Student Conservation Association/AmeriCorps Environmental Educator, 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Monday, July 1 for a discussion about the long association between nature and the oral and written traditions in human cultures. The outing will include a four-mile, round trip walk to the tranquil Echo Rock, where the group will listen to some of these stories and explore their significance. Come prepared with appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear, plenty of water, and food. Meet at the Lake Minnewaska Visitor Center, 5281 Route 44/55, Kerhonkson. Bike to Hike at Minnewaska

Join Laura Conner, Environmental Educator, 9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 2 for a bike ride to Lake Awosting and a loop hike in the Minnewaska back country. Starting on Lake Minnewaska Carriage Road, the group will ride to Upper Awosting Carriage Road and follow until it ends at Lake Awosting. From there, they’ll continue along the Lake Awosting Carriage Road to the beach area, where they’ll lock and leave the bikes on a bike rack. Next, they’ll grab their backpacks and hike a scenic loop along Spruce Glen and Scenic Trail Footpaths, stopping at Murray Hill for the views, before walking back to the beach along the edge of Lake Awosting. For the return ride, they’ll cruise along a short section of Castle Point Carriage Road until connecting with Hamilton Point Carriage Road, which offers gorgeous sweeping views of the Palmaghatt Ravine. Then, they’ll ride the last part of our journey along Millbrook Mountain and Lake Minnewaska Carriage Roads. The total distance for the bike ride is approximately nine miles and the hike distance is approximately one and a half miles. Participants must bring their own bikes, equipment, food and water. Only Class 1, pedal-assist, electric bikes are allowed in the Park Preserve. Meet at the Lake Minnewaska Visitor Center Upper Parking Lot, 5281 Route 44/55, Kerhonkson.
