Raina Maissel of New Paltz, NY, died peacefully in her home on January 27, 2025, at 93. Raina was born in London, England, the daughter of Golde and Louis Corren. She and Leon Maissel (d. 2016) were married for 60 years. She is survived by her children Gerda Maissel and Joseph (Joe) Maissel and grandchildren Ari Munic, Nathaniel Munic, Julian Maissel, Jonas Maissel and Stephen Maissel. Her eldest son, Simon Maissel, pre-deceased her in 2018.

Raina received her Law degree in 1954 from the University of London. She and Leon moved to the Hudson Valley in 1960. Raina’s professional and community achievements were extensive. She loved participating in community theatre groups such as County Players. She was active in community service and, in the 1970s, led an effort to stop the development of the South Hills Mall. She enjoyed her service on the Board of the New York State Bridge Authority. Raina practiced Family Law, ultimately retiring from Gellert and Cutler.

Raina was a voracious reader, who stayed up all night finishing a long novel. Raina and Leon traveled extensively, enjoying trips to the South Seas, Machu Picchu, and other global destinations.

After Leon passed, Raina joined the Woodland Pond community in New Paltz. She enjoyed many trips, meals, and new friends. Her children are grateful to Jason Irish, Sarah Leonard, Mary Jo Murry, Angel Murphy, Ruth Fialkow and others. Her children are also grateful to many individuals at Hudson Valley Hospice, especially her nurse Alissa Gileau, for their kindness and compassion.

To honor Raina’s memory, consider a donation in her name to the Bardavon in Poughkeepsie or the Democratic National Committee.

An informal remembrance gathering will be held at Woodland Pond in New Paltz on Sunday, February 2, from 2:00 to 3:30 pm. All are welcome.
