75th Annual Dick Smith Memorial Ulster County Open Tennis Tournament, entry deadline June 30

Posted

This event is sponsored by the Mid-Hudson Valley Tennis Association (MHVTA) in cooperation with the City of Kingston Parks and Recreation Department.

Participants can enter 2 doubles events and 1 singles event. If in multiple draws, expect to play twice in a given day. Each double’s team and single’s player bring a USTA approved can of tennis balls. One opens and the winner gets the new can. Failure to show up within 15 minutes of a scheduled match (unless granted permission from tournament directors) could result in a forfeit.

All open matches are 2/3 sets with 12-point tiebreaker at 6-6. Players make their own line calls. USTA guidelines are followed which says a player must be sure a ball is out or give the benefit of the doubt to your opponent. As a public event, there must be etiquette and appropriate behavior on the courts, no obscenities, racquet abuse, etc.

The plan is to have all the doubles finals on Saturday, July 20 and singles finals on Sunday, July 21. A schedule of matches will be sent the first weekend in July, but not too much in advance as weather could affect the schedule. Participants should be able to play weeknights and weekends when scheduled. If rain causes a change, players are expected to change with the schedule, too. Match times are going to be sent the night before. Matches will be scheduled from 5:30-10 p.m. weeknights and on weekends in the morning hours and late to early evening hours, but weather will play a factor based on matches completed the day before. Match times may be changed for matches before the semi-finals and finals if they can be played before the scheduled time and as long as all participants agree when and where to play. For all semi-final and final matches in all tournaments, players must adhere to the tournament schedule, as spectators should be able to come see those matches and know when they are played. No changes in the schedule and place of matches can be made without prior permission of the tournament directors.

All players are asked to list their USTA UTR rating and/or their NTRP rating on the application plus any other relevant information that will help the tournament directors assign accurate seeds for each draw.

Application deadline is June 30. Player schedules will be emailed out once the application and entry fee is received. Entry fees are $35 for each singles event; $60, each doubles event ($30 for each person). Make check payable to MHVTA and mail to Scott Taylor 29 Cheryl Ct. Kingston, NY 12401. Both doubles and singles draws will be running simultaneously July 12-21 at Forsyth Park Tennis Courts and Kingston High School tennis courts. For application, email mhvtennisassociation@gmail.com.

All proceeds will benefit the NJTL program to develop Jr. Tennis players as well as make improvements for the tennis courts at Forsyth Park.
