Annual Spring Concert Series at SUNY Ulster

The SUNY Ulster Music Department will present its second and third ensemble concerts of the spring semester, 7:30 p.m. Wednesdays, April 24, and May 1, in the Quimby Theater at Vanderlyn Hall on the Stone Ridge campus, 491 Cottekill Road, Stone Ridge. The concerts are free and open to the public.

The April 24 concert will feature the SUNY Ulster College/Community Band directed by Victor Izzo with Guest Conductors, Carla Newsome, Sam Newsome, and Adam Kulizewski. Band members include SUNY Ulster and SUNY New Paltz students, community members, advanced area high school students, and area music educators. They will be playing a wide variety of both classical and new wind band concert pieces and marches.

On May 1, the SUNY Ulster College Chorus directed by Janet Gehres and accompanied by Edward Leavitt will feature a diverse choral program including music by Italian Renaissance composer Orzio Vecchi, Austrian Classical/Romantic Composer Franz Schubert, Musical Theater Composer Stephen Sondheim, along with folks songs from America and Hungary. The choir is made up of SUNY Ulster students, faculty and staff, and community members. Also performing is the African Music Ensemble directed by Paul Chambers. The African Music Ensemble is preparing arrangements of traditional djembe rhythms and balafon melodies from the peoples of Guinea and surrounding areas of West Africa. Music to be featured includes that of the Susu, Malinke, and Baga peoples. Ensemble members include students, faculty and staff, and community members. The evening will conclude with the Best Performances of SUNY Ulster Wednesday 1 p.m. Convocation Series featuring Applied Music and Community Music School Lesson Students and other SUNY Ulster music students.
